July 24

Eventually having warm, summer weather has made a huge difference and residents have been able to sit outside in our beautiful courtyard garden.

We did jigsaw puzzles and played scrabble and had our usual activities. However, the highlight of the month was our Caribbean Party on 19th July. Staff, residents and their families had a great time, and the weather was amazing.

Most people sat outside and enjoyed Eesha’s steel pan performance, the staff entertained with a cricket and enjoyed singing songs like Yellow Bird and One Love. There was Conga dancing and a limbo pole. Activities Staff created a fun Caribbean activity booklet with quizzes and word searches.

A huge thanks must go to our kitchen staff who all worked incredibly hard behind the scenes to create a colourful, Caribbean buffet which looked amazing and tasted even better.

The last couple of weeks have been active and creative. We had a relaxing afternoon painting berries and flowers and in craft afternoon and we made some palm trees to use as table decorations for the Caribbean Party. We also decorated a limbo pole! Not long to go now before the party on the 19th July. We had a baking afternoon and made shortbread biscuits for a coffee morning when, as it has been Wimbledon, we also had strawberries and cream. In Active Games we have had both a Wimbledon and Football theme. We enjoyed an energetic time with balloons and fly swatters and yesterday brought out the football and goals.

This week has been a lovely one celebrating three of our residents birthdays. Joyce S is now 103 – our second oldest resident. Dorothy had her birthday yesterday and today we celebrated Joan’s with good old Mr Kipling cakes, coffee and tea.

We had a dance themed music morning with songs from Engelbert Humperdinck and musicals covering Ballet, Quickstep, Jive, and the Waltz. A wonderful mix of old classics and classical dances. Joyce C, our resident accomplished dancer, was swaying in time and everybody enjoyed Joan’s music selection.

We have just had our second visit from Banana Moon Nursery and they entertained us making flags, football shirts and fans.

Maggie-Mae had her monthly visit and she had her usual treats and pats from her fans.

We have started preparing for Broomgrove Caribbean themed party on 19th July. In Craft on Tuesday we started making attractive, brightly coloured paper flowers.

All family and friends are welcome to join us from 2.30 -6 pm. We have live Caribbean music and, between 4.30 and 5.30pm, our wonderful Broomgrove chefs will be preparing Caribbean themed food. Just ring the office if you would like to attend.

28th May

In coffee morning last week we were pleased to welcome a group of student nurses from Hallam University. The residents had a great time chatting with them and the nurses are already missing them!

Music Club was Judith’s choice this week and we all enjoyed a mixture of tracks from opera and various musicals.

As the weather was warm on Friday, Yoga took place in the garden and residents enjoyed the gentle exercise. The exercise was slightly more energetic in Exercise Morning with Nadia the physio.

Maggie-Mae the PAT dog came for her monthly visit and she enjoyed being fussed over and having treats. It was just as much fun for the residents, who always look forward to her visit.

Our Saturday afternoon film was Dad’s Army the Movie, which was fun, as was playing Dominoes and Snakes and Ladders.

My mother, who died recently, lived at Broomgrove for the final three and a half years of her life. She had moved house only once before, over 90 years previously, but she quickly felt at home in Broomgrove. Because Broomgrove offers nursing care, my mother was glad to know that she would be unlikely to need a further move. It was also reassuring to know that Broomgrove is an independent, well established, local charitable Trust.
Broomgrove provides exceptionally good care and an amazing programme of activities and social events. My mother especially enjoyed Broomgrove’s lovely sheltered garden – one of the many features of Broomgrove that make it ‘home’ rather than ‘A Home’. For residents and their family and friends, Broomgrove removes the worry of day to day care and makes spending time with loved ones a real pleasure. We all felt – and will always feel - part of Broomgrove’s extended ‘family’ and we are so grateful to all the staff, management and trustees.

Frances S (Daughter of Resident) Testimonial

My aunt has been a resident at Broomgrove for nearly ten years and whilst she has many challenges physically, her intellect is as sharp as ever. She's always felt totally at home at Broomgrove. I visit her regularly and she's always full of praise for the care and professionalism of the staff. The home always has a relaxed and happy vibe and the staff always go the extra mile to ensure she's as comfortable as possible.
